About the PSD

The Public Sector Directory contains a comprehensive list of New Zealand Government organisations.

The data for this directory has been collated and cleaned from a variety of sources including Archives New Zealand, the State Services Commission, Local Government New Zealand and direct from the various agencies. The resulting data is stored on an LDAP (Light Directory Access Protocol) server. Entries are updated as information comes to hand and are reviewed for changes progressively in a two month cycle.

The PSD data is also available for download in a variety of formats. This is currently offered as a web service. If you have a need for the data please got to http://toolkit.psd.govt.nz or contact us. The toolkit site also has some useful web browser extensions and a search widget that can be installed on any web site.

What is in the PSD?

The Directory has a head office entry for each organisation in the state sector plus local authorities. By convention, the term 'state sector' refers to the organisations in the annual financial statements of the Government prepared under the Public Finance Act 1989. In addition, semi-independent divisions of larger organisations are listed as Independent Brands where they have a public identity. Not listed are primary and secondary schools and Statutory and Significant Non-Statutory Organisations associated with Ministerial Portfolios. Examples of these include the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company. These organisations do not form part of the state sector, and it is difficult to get an authoritative list of them.

NOTE: Public Sector is government in its widest sense.
Public Sector = central Government + all local authorities ('local Government')
State Sector = All organisations in the annual financial statements of the Crown (i.e. Departments + Offices of Parliament + SOEs + Crown Entities + Reserve Bank + Māori Television Service)
Public Service = The Departments listed in the First Schedule to the State Sector Act
